La Brea Pitch Lake

Your journey takes you to the Southern part of Trinidad, La Brea, where you will experience a tour on the Pitch Lake. One of the wonders of the world, the lake is a self-replenishing body of natural bitumen and has the largest known deposits in the world. It covers 46.5 hectares (115 acres) and is 41 metres (135feet) deep at its center. The lake was sacred to the Amerindians long before Sir Walter Raleigh used the pitch to caulk his ships on his visit to Trinidad in 1595. There is an interesting folk tale which would be revealed to you while on tour across the lake’s surface. Have no fear it is stable enough for walking upon. The tour includes a visit to the Visitor center with a small museum which houses artifacts and interesting historical data.
